Industrial Ecology is an emerging interdisciplinary field combining natural, technical and social sciences in a systems view at scale levels from the global to the local. Its core concept is the analogy between processes in nature (biosphere) and processes in society (techno-sphere). Evolution has resulted in a highly efficient use of materials and energy in biosphere systems: waste from one process is a resource for another. In today’s society, resources are exploited, producing unusable waste streams and release of pollutants to soil, water, and air, leading to complex sustainability problems. Society might take lessons from the biosphere to solve these problems.
The MIND programme (ERASMUS MUNDUS Master’s programme in Industrial Ecology) is a new two-year programme with 120 ECTS, offering a unique Industrial Ecology education for 15 Third-country and 10 EU students per edition. Those 25 students can study at two or three universities of the MIND consortium, representing seven universities.
The objective of the MIND programme is to train students
- to conduct industrial ecology analyses of such complex sustainability problems,
- to design industrial ecology solutions for these problems and
- to develop implementation strategies for those solutions identified.
Therefore, MIND is in the heart of the EU needs of the “Europe 2020 strategy”, because due to the current sustainability problems and imminent EU and global transitions in energy systems, food systems etc. there is a great need for Industrial Ecology trained persons that have a grasp of the complexities of the field of sustainable development.
Scholarships
For study year 2011/12, nine Category A and eight Category B students plus one student from the region “Turkey/West Balkan states” can be awarded by the European Commission with a scholarship; i.e. there will be 18 scholarships for 25 students. How to apply
There is a twofold application process for the MIND programme. The first step is sending a letter with specific appendices, see the following, please:
1) If you meet the requirements, please send the following items by mail:
- Certified copy of your Bachelor’s Degree (in case it is not in English, a certified English translation has to be enclosed)
- Transcript of records from your study including a list of courses and grades achieved
- Copy of your passport
- For non-native English speakers: Evidence of proficiency in English language
- Two letters of reference by scholars/academics, that are staff members of the university, where you have been awarded with your Bachelors degree
- Signed motivation letter (minimum two, maximum three A4 pages)
- Your E-Mail address

2) After the University of Graz has received your letter, it will check all items and in case that everything is okay you will be invited by E-Mail for the second step of the application process.
This will include:
• Filling in an application form (with your personal data, language skills, employment record if available)
• CV with all details on your visited higher education institutions
• Your needs for housing (coming alone, with partner, family…)
• Your (potential) application for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship
• The indication of your first and second preference for the EU university for your first study year; your first, second and third preference for the universities chosen for your third and fourth semester
• Any additional information you want to present (e.g. on potential publications, posters, conference talks; etc.)
It is planned to finish this second step and therefore the whole application process by 15 February 2011.
Successful applicants will be informed at latest by 28 February 2011.
However, the final approval of selected MIND students and scholarships awarded will be done by the European Commission in April 2011.
